Stink bugs, most commonly the brown marmorated stink bug (BMSB) in Connecticut are invasive pests known for entering homes in large numbers, especially during the fall. These shield-shaped insects measure about ½ inch long and are mottled brown or gray. While they do not bite, sting, or cause structural damage, they release a foul odor when crushed or disturbed, making them a significant nuisance for homeowners.
Stink bugs are not dangerous to humans or pets. They do not bite, spread disease, or damage furniture or structures. However, their odor can linger when they feel threatened or are accidentally crushed. They may also stain surfaces or fabrics if squished. The main issue occurs when large numbers gather inside homes during cool weather, often appearing on walls, windows, or ceilings as they search for warmth.
Stink bugs seek out sheltered, warm places to overwinter once temperatures drop. They often enter homes through gaps around windows, doors, siding, vents, chimney caps, and damaged screens. Properties with abundant vegetation, gardens, or fruit trees may experience higher activity, as stink bugs feed on a wide range of plants outdoors before moving indoors for winter. Once inside, they remain hidden within walls, attics, and crawl spaces until warm days in late winter or spring draw them back into living areas.
Stink bugs are most noticeable on sunny walls, windows, and siding during fall as they gather in search of indoor entry points. Once inside, they hide in cracks, wall voids, attics, basements, and around window frames. Throughout the winter, they remain inactive, only emerging when temperatures rise. In spring, homeowners often see them wandering indoors as they attempt to leave the house and return outdoors.
Once stink bugs enter a home, they can be difficult to eliminate since they hide deep within walls and reappear periodically. Crushing them releases an unpleasant odor, so handling them improperly can make the situation worse.
