Rodents

Wherever you find people, you’ll find rodents. These critters like to make their homes near large populations of humans, rummaging through our trash and sheltering themselves in our climate-controlled structures. The name “rodent” comes from the Latin “rodere,” meaning “to gnaw.” Appropriate given that all rodents have large front incisors which continuously grow throughout their life. They use these to chew through wood, furniture, wiring, and anything else they come across.

Three of the most common species of rodents in Connecticut are field mice, white-footed mice, and Norway rats.

Are rodents dangerous?

The biggest danger associated with rodents is disease. Rats, after all, were one of the primary causes of the Black Plague. These creatures commonly carry parasites as fleas and ticks which they transport into our homes. These insects in turn carry and transmit diseases that can affect humans, sometimes leading to serious illness. If that weren’t enough, rats and mice leave fecal dropping wherever they go, contaminating food and surfaces.

Aside from illness, rodents also cause extensive damage to property. Their ability to gnaw through wires and pipes can result in potentially devastating consequences, including fire hazards and water damage.

Why do I have a rodent problem?

Rodent invasions can occur at any time, but are most common in the fall and winter. As the weather cools down, rats and mice will seek out sheltered environments to stay warm. Food is also a strong attractor for them. Exposed trash cans, pet food, compost, picnic areas, and gardens can easily lure them onto your property.

Where will I find rodents?

Rodents like to nest in secluded areas near their food source. Outside, this means fields, gardens, and wood piles. However, rodents are exceptionally good at squeezing into small spaces and it’s easy for them to enter a home through gaps in the foundation and under doors and windows. Once inside, they will make a home in basements, attics, crawl spaces, and inside walls.

How can I prevent a termite infestation?

  • Seal entry points: Inspect your home for any gaps or openings that rodents can use to enter. Seal cracks in walls, floors, and foundation with caulk or other appropriate sealants. Install door sweeps and weather stripping to seal gaps around doors and windows.
  • Keep a clean environment: Regularly clean your home, paying attention to areas where food particles may accumulate, such as kitchens and dining areas. Keep countertops, floors, and pantry spaces clean and free of crumbs. Store food in airtight containers.
  • Proper waste management: Dispose of garbage in sturdy, tightly sealed bins. Keep outdoor trash cans securely covered to prevent rodents from accessing food sources.
  • Remove outdoor attractants: Trim tree branches that could provide rodents with easy access to your roof. Clear yard debris, such as leaf piles and fallen fruits or nuts.
  • Store firewood properly: Keep firewood stacks elevated and at a distance from your home’s exterior. This reduces potential nesting spots for rodents near your property.
  • Maintain proper drainage: Ensure proper drainage around your home to prevent water accumulation, as rodents are attracted to moisture. Repair leaky pipes and clear clogged drains.
  • Install rodent-proof screens: Cover vents and openings in walls, roofs, and crawl spaces with mesh screens or hardware cloth to prevent rodent entry while allowing ventilation.
  • Eliminate potential nesting sites: Remove clutter and stored items from basements, attics, and garages. Keep these areas clean and organized to minimize potential hiding spots for rodents.
