Too many legs. That’s what gives centipedes and millipedes their name. While they may look freaky, these insects play an important role in local ecology, breaking down organic matter in the soil. However, despite the beneficial role they play outside, when they come indoors these bugs can become a nuisance.
Though similar, there’s an important difference between these two creatures. Centipedes are carnivorous and their sharp jaws contain venom that can sting if you are bit. Millipedes meanwhile feed on decaying plants and animals. They don’t bite and move much more slowly than centipedes.
While centipede bites are painful, their venom isn’t strong enough to cause any real damage. Millipedes on the other hand produce a fluid that can trigger a rash in some people. However, neither species is known to carry any diseases harmful to humans. Still, when they move into your home in large numbers, it can be annoying to deal with.
Most centipede and millipede infestations occur during the summer when the weather is hot and dry. This is because the insects require a lot of moisture to survive. They typically live in the damp soil and mulch of gardens, under rocks or trash cans, or within woodpiles. When these shelters dry out, they go looking for a new home.
Like most bugs, these critters crawl into your home through small cracks they find in the walls, foundation, and entrances to your home. Once inside, they typically head to areas that are dark and damp such as basements, garages, laundry rooms, kitchens, and bathrooms.
Removing potential hiding space, cleaning up food sources, and using a dehumidifier can discourage centipedes and millipedes from sticking around. Sticky glue traps can also be effective at combating smaller infestations. However, for bigger jobs, contact the experts at Northeast Exterminating.
