Cockroach Control

Cockroaches are one of the most common and most challenging infestations to deal with. Despite being among the most hated species of insects on the planet, they can be found nearly everywhere on Earth. Cockroaches are incredibly resilient and resourceful, able to live in extreme conditions. Unfortunately, this makes them very hard to kill. As if that weren’t bad enough, they’re also prolific breeders.

Connecticut is home to two prevalent cockroach species: the German cockroach and the brown-banded cockroach. The German cockroach can be recognized by its tannish-brown body, marked with two distinct parallel lines between its head and thorax. The brown-banded cockroach meanwhile features a darker body with light bands stretching horizontally across it.

Are cockroaches dangerous?

Cockroaches travel through sewers, drains, and trash piles to reach your home. This means they frequently carry dangerous diseases including bacteria like E. coli and salmonella. They can easily contaminate your home’s food and surfaces if left unchecked. Besides this, living with cockroaches is stressful and can negatively affect your mental health.

Why do I have a cockroach problem?

Cockroaches are primarily attracted by food and water. Open trash cans, exposed pet food, leaky pipes, and even gardens and compost may tempt these critters onto your property. However, once inside, they will eat almost anything. They may also be introduced by hitchhiking on delivery bags or a piece of reclaimed furniture.

Where will I find cockroaches?

Unlike other species, brown-banded cockroaches don’t need much water to survive, meaning you can find them in some unlikely spots. Attics, cabinets, baseboards, window and door frames, and other dry areas make sufficient nesting grounds.

German cockroaches meanwhile are found near water or wherever food is stored. Kitchens, bathrooms, and basements provide them with suitable homes. You’ll catch them in sinks, behind fridges, and inside walls.

How can I prevent a cockroach infestation?

  • Keep your home clean: Regularly clean your living spaces, including floors, countertops, and areas where food is prepared or consumed.
  • Properly store food: Seal food in airtight containers and avoid leaving uncovered food out in the open.
  • Dispose of garbage properly: Keep trash cans tightly sealed and empty them regularly. Clean your trash cans to eliminate any odors that might attract cockroaches.
  • Seal entry points: Inspect your home for cracks, gaps, and openings around doors, windows, pipes, and utility lines.
  • Eliminate water sources: Fix any leaks or drips in plumbing fixtures and ensure proper drainage in the kitchen, bathroom, and other areas where water is present.
  • Declutter your living spaces: Remove clutter and unnecessary items from your home, as cockroaches seek hiding places in dark, undisturbed areas. Regularly clean and organize storage areas to minimize potential hiding spots.
